The product worn in order to be seen

Until the early eighties, underwear was something you hid under your clothes. From 1982 Calvin Klein marketed it as a designer product and wrote the brand name into the elastic waistband — visible above the trousers. Several independent fashion titles name this garment as the brand’s defining product.

That is this brand’s real contribution to fashion history, and it is not a textile one. It was never about cotton quality. It was about the idea that a label belongs on the outside.

Who owns the brand

Calvin Klein has belonged to PVH Corp. — then still Phillips-Van Heusen — since 2003. Tommy Hilfiger followed in 2010, for several times the price. Both purchases reshaped the company so thoroughly that it renamed itself PVH Corp. In its annual report (Form 10-K), PVH lists both as its load-bearing brands.

For a buyer that means the name on the waistband belongs to a designer who left the company long ago. That is not a criticism, but it is worth knowing if you believe you are buying a person’s label.

What PVH discloses — and what the list does not cover

PVH publishes a supplier list with factory name, address and number of employees. That is more than most houses in our sample manage, and it is why this brand does not sit at the bottom of our evidence score.

The list covers what the group has made for itself. Fragrance, eyewear and watches carrying the same name come from licensees — separate companies that bought the right to use it. They do not appear on the factory list.

A factory list answers where the group has things sewn. Not where everything bearing its name comes from.

What we cannot tell you

We have not checked a Calvin Klein product. Without our own material check the portrait lacks the figures we read at source for Uniqlo, Zara or Trigema — composition, price, place of manufacture. That shows in the evidence score, and rightly so: the score also measures how far our own research has got.
